Social Networking Strategies + International Geological Conference

This week I’m going to discuss some social networking strategies such as Facebook, Google Docs, DropBox and Youtube. All these social networking tools which are going to help IGC to reach their goals and objectives. So this post includes some strategies of using Social Networking tools and define those tools and how can IGC address and achieve IGC objectives.


At first, We have to know the definition of Social Networking…..

What is mean by Social Networking….?

Social Networks which are tools for creating an online community.  These communities allow people to create personal profiles and connect through that profiles, add more people, send messages, upload photos and videos. Also Social Network provides some features such as liking content and  pages, tagging and joining groups. However, people wants to share their information with others and willing to know other’s information as well then they able to have a connection with each other.

Following video shows that how connecting with others over a Social Network can provide many benefits.


Facebook is the most used Social Network tool in the world. According to David Cowling (2011), Facebook has more than 10 million activate users. Also, Facebook as a Social Network service owes its popularity to the fact is easy to use platform and user friendly because user does not need to have a good knowledge about technology.

For an example: when I signed in and tried Facebook, I’m very happy because this platform was offered me to meet new people and socialize. Then I started to get connected with my childhood friends, high school and college friends finally I had lost all the contacts and hacked my Facebook account from hacker. It was an amazing experience.


Google Docs is the another famous Social Network. Google is the company which offers this cloud computing service.

This application are not tied to a particular computer also there was no software to download and install. That’s the most advantage fact of this service. So user able to connected to internet and access Google Docs even though use can access the same file from anywhere because each user saves information to the cloud system.The other fact was online collaboration which means, multiple users can make edits to the same files at the same time.

However, I found that Google Docs is more important for my assignments and groups projects for similar reasons, which are, I do not need to create many documents and also y able to edit, share those documents with my other group partners. Because it’s time consuming and easy to collaborate with other members.


Dropbox is other most popular cloud service which lets you to store, sync and share files over the internet, which means, this is a free service and lets you bring your photos, videos and docs anywhere and share them easily. This video gives you a rough idea about Dropbox.

The Dropbox users able to see the file system usage analytics. According to the dropbox forums, “The managers says that, in the future, the way of sync will be change”. So I think, the automatically sync will be accessed in frequently.

However, I found that, Dropbox is very useful for my group works specially in assignments. Because Dropbox gave me free access and usage upto 2GB capacity. So I can sync my files into the cloud service and use those files through my Mac and Android phone.


The YouTube is the leader in online video and premier destination to watch and share original videos to the worldwide. Also YouTube allows user to post and tag videos and watch those videos posted by others, post comments, create and participate in topical groups.

Even though, YouTube ties into some blogging applications and giving users a quick way to blog regarding particular video including with a link to it.

How ever, personally YouTube is  very useful for me to save famous videos which I watch it before and leave comments on famous videos. Also I can create a profile and able to upload videos and post it to the web. Then others able to comment on my videos and get connected with me. One of the advantage was, I can share videos in other Social Network such as Facebook and Twitter.


Next I’m going to discuss about the strategy of using Social Networking for IGC….


There were few strategies that IGC have to focus on. The service that would be provide to the community by using Social Networks. Because, Social media users wanted to find out which organisation offers great experience and adventure with simplicity and creativity to them.

For an example, ITunes uses Facebook as one of the most used Social Network in the world to indirectly promote their products items. So ITunes has indirectly made their brand known to the network. This is a best way to advertise ITunes using Social Network in order to attract more customers.

Therefore, If IGC able to make a profile or fan page on Facebook then people able to share it with their friends by using the share or Like button. As a result of that people who are extended network to see and find out about IGC events and conference. Although, if IGC able to make a Facebook event page, they able to invite people to it. So people can invite their friends to the event as well as to help spread it around. These strategies are very easy to implement and increase with no extra work from the IGC.

How ever, using these strategies will be ensure delegates attendance. Also make an awareness of the event and having a better communication method with future delegates and specially the people who are interested about the IGC events.

This week I’m going to discuss about Wiki’s strategy for International Geological Congress including a brief introduction about Wiki and how to implement the those strategies..

At first, What is Wiki…..?

This will gives you a short brief…..

It’s a web site which allows everyone edit and update information within the website. But it depends on the privacy settings. Wiki is considered to be a collaborate tool where people able to take away work from particular people. If you more interested about wiki more…. please click here…. 

So how IGC will benefit from using wiki and what are the strategies of using Wiki…??

There were two strategies which IGC able to use Wiki as a communication method except using emails and also using Wiki to edit and create topics for the events. At First, Wiki  is using instead of emails and Wiki could be use as a communication method between sponsors and stakeholders. So IGC able to discuss various types of topics and the event for Geology Science.

The Second strategy is information regarding the event. So IGC and stakeholder able to create topics which will be discussing during the event. The benefit form this strategy are balancing work load from the employees and sharing knowledge to everyone. This gives new opportunity to create new ideas and helpful to next events.

What are the implementation for Wiki…?

At first, the Wiki has to be set as private or internal for stakeholders and sponsor. Then, those people only can create and edit topic and also information would be stakeholders, employees or sponsors.

The second strategy, Wiki has to be set as public so that, outside people able to view and read the information regarding IGC. But IGC has to disable edit function and restricted in copy information from the Wiki. So outside people able to view information and get the idea from the Wiki.

At the end, Wiki has to enable the collaborative work load between the employee to edit and add information from Wiki platform.

This week I’m going to discuss about Corporate Blogging strategies and how can enhance branding, collaboration, connect with leaders to build better relationship with customers.


What is Micr-Blogging means…?

It’s a social method of communication which enables people to communicate with each other through a series of post and also called as tweets. In another words we would like to know what other people doing, watching, listening, writing or reading because human have an inquisitive nature.  Apart from that, people dont know what Micro-Blogging but they talking and using in some form.


The good example of Micro-Blogging is Twitter, which is a Micro – Blogging platform. The short ‘micro’ nature of the ‘tweets’ means it is quickly to post and easily consumable by readers. However, there was an one of the reason of using Micro-Blogging are openness, flexibility and simplicity.


What is the International Geological Congress (IGC)…?


The Australian Geological Council is the organising body which is responsible for the 34th Geological Congres.  So International Geological Congress will be held from the 5th to 10th August in next year. Also International Geological Congress is a forum for presenting scientific results across the whole spectrum of the geosciences. Some of the  facilities in IGC are encourage international networking, holding business meetings and provides an opportunity to study geological features of the interest.


There were some major stakeholders for IGC in next year such as Australian Geoscience Council (AGC), Australian Government, BHP Billiton, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), The University of Queensland (UQ), Rowland, and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).





So, every major event they will face many issues and challenges to achieve their goals. As it is a big event, IGC were expecting around 6,000 to 7,00 delegates to attend their event.  However, there are some factors which are going to affect people’s decisions.


* General raise in living cost in Australia such as accommodation, transportation and food.

* The Global Finance Crisis has affected on the AUS currency which resulting more expenses for these delegates to put out compared to the previous event.


How we going to use Micro-Blogging as a strategy to overcome the issues and achieve the goal…???

I think the strategy is using a blog to advertise events such as advertise their informations regarding the events. As a result of advertise IGC able to connect with readers and companies. So, that blog will provide readers with information the events which means what the conference and events about, etc. Although IGC has to post those news on a daily or weekly basis because that helps readers to absorb what’s happening and knowing more about the events. Then readers able to comment on each new post and easier for company to respond them.


Apart from that, Twitter is another Micro-Blogging platform which helps followers up-to date on the progress leading up to the event. So IGC can use Twitter to advertise the event and IGC will be able to ‘tweet’ links to their website where followers can view events information, what event is all about and including the conference etc.

How ROI can be calculated for enterprise 2.0 projects..?

During the semester, we have discussed the benefits of adopting Web 2.0 tools in to the Enterprise. Also these benefits are quite challenging. So need to measure the Return of Investment is more important because of major increasing in the use of web 2.o tools.  The important clue is to understand that Return of Investment come from ” the activity and actual collaboration” and it’s not from technologies.

So what is Return of Investment means…..?

Return of Investments measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments. Following the picture gives you a rough idea that how to calculate.



Following formulas can calculate and measure the different aspects of investment.

1. ROI =  ( Gain from Investment – Cost of Investment ) / Cost of Investment

The Return of the Investment is divided by the cost of the investment and result is expresses as percentage.


2. ROI = ( Revenue – Investment ) + Targeted Engagement / Investment * 100

This could be used as a measuring conventional advertisement campaigns.


3. ROI = ( Revenue – Investment ) + Employee Retention / Investment * 100

The impact of using this was highly involved employees, profitability and productivity will be increase.


Although, from business side, companies gaines with costs and it relates to money. So social business people gains with following areas:

# Call Center Operation

# Brand Protection

# Customer Insights

# Sales Revenue

# Lead Generation

So People and Technologies are the costs. Because people need to run the projects and they have to pay money for the technology such as softwares or which are host by Microsoft.  As a result of this ROI is calculated by subtracting the costs from the gains.


The Enterprise 2.0 success could be measured by following areas:


1. Employee engagement : From employment engagement they can get work experience, improving their knowledge and also employees are able to get real time feedback, gratification and visibility. Most of the companies conducting annual surveys for work engagement, so measure aggregate engagement that you have to have at least one rating per employee. However combining this data with employees usage in enterprise social software and other data points which can be impact of engagement such as promotion opportunities.


2. Turnover : Company need to obtain data concerning about the employee usage of the community as well as other data points which could be an impact on turnover rates such as promotional opportunities, tenure, salary market conditions.  However the company’s employment records have to identify employees which are turned over since you launched your network.


3. Sales : Using enterprise social software is one way to measure the sales because its focus on results of the sales team. Even though it is acquire the same data and make sure that you account for other factors which might be impact on sales. Moreover using regression analysis is an impact of enterprise social software.

There are few benefits for using Enterprise 2.o. Which are,

Customer Satisfaction : Customer ideas and suggestion were helpful to improve the companies products and ideas. Also with an eye toward higher satisfaction and lower churn.


Saving time : As implementation of web 2.0 tools could help companies to save time. So saving time will be measuring according to the previous product development and it leads to cost saving through reducing advertise time frames.

Cost savings : There were several ways to save money such as loyalty cards or using social media and public forums to advertise instead of using printing media. Therefore  cost is measured in monetary terms by comparing overhead.


Employee satisfaction : The ability to find the correct person to help with an idea or project.

The Maslow’s pyramid gives you a brief explanation about how increased Enterprise 2.0.  Regression analysis is a mathematical tool which used to calculate between variables on large sets of data. Preparing data for analysis will be the more time consuming activity and taking more time to analysis the data will help to prevent mistakes.

However companies can tailor their own Enterprise 2.0 ROI model that suitable for their organisation.  Also companies can create ROI model in line with their own requirements. So that can achieve and successfully measure ROI as a result of implementation of Enterprise 2.0.

Social media risks at Dominos pizza

A Domino’s employee in Conover, N.C., is seen assembling sandwiches, spraying snot on them, sticking cheese up his nose before placing it on a piece of bread and passing gas on a slice of salami. The woman holding the camera narrates. “In about five minutes, they’ll be sent out to delivery, where somebody will be eating these, yes, eating them. And little did they know that cheese was in his nose and that there was some lethal gas that ended up on their salami,” she proclaims proudly “That’s how we roll at Domino’s”.

The woman, Kristy Hammonds, 31, uploaded the video on YouTube. In a matter of days, thanks to Twitter and other viral social media, the clip had been viewed more than a million times and Domino’s had an instant crisis on its hands. Both Hammonds and the other employee in the clip, Michael Setzer, 32, have been fired from the pizza-delivery chain and now face felony charges for distributing prohibited foods.

The company did not publicly respond to the video immediately, hoping attention would subside. But when it became clear by mid-week that the controversy was only escalating, Domino’s executives acted. The company posted an apology on its website and asked employees with Twitter accounts to tweet a link to it. The company also created its own Twitter account, @dpzinfo, to reassure consumers that this was an isolated incident. And Domino’s U.S.A. president, Patrick Doyle, issued an apology on YouTube.

There are four ways to attack a corporate crisis in the digital age:

1.  Blog

2.  Go Back to Its Base

3.  Update Wikipedia

Blackshaw calls Wikipedia a “reputational broker,” a gateway through which financial analysts, the media and even current and future customers come in contact with the brand.

4.  Friend Google

If you searched for “Domino’s” on Google on April 17, the video, entitled “Disgusting Domino’s People,” was the third result (the president’s video apology, entitled “Disgusting Dominos People — Domino’s Respond,” was the fourth). If you searched for “Domino’s and disgusting,” the whole first page of results dealt with the incident. One link screams “Never Eat at Dominos Again.” The company has to move more aggressively to cancel out the negative reinforcement in the Google results.

What is Web 2.0….?


When you google there are so many define names will come up but simply described as the second generation of the Word Wide Web. It’s mainly focused on collaborating and sharing information online for the people. This video gives you a rough idea about what web 2.0 is…?

A number of online tools and platforms are now defining how people share their perspectives, opinions, thoughts and experiences. Web 2.0 tools such as weblogs, RSS, video casting, social bookmarking, social networking, podcasts and picture sharing sites are becoming more and more popular. One major advantage of Web 2.0 tools is that the majority of them are free.

I think many people will have already used some of these Web 2.0 tools, and a good way to explain the concept of Web 2.0 tools is to consider an example of how they can be used.Although user can embed ,display or download any kind of video and choose the up to eight different languages. “Blog” is an abbreviated version of “weblog“, which is a term used to describe web sites that maintain an ongoing chronicle of information. A blog features diary-type commentary and links to articles on other Web sites, usually presented as a list of entries in reverse chronological order.

Blogs range from the personal to the political, and can focus on one narrow subject or a whole range of subjects.There are famous blog platforms such as Google Blogger and WordPress. I found that there were few difference.


Google Blogger  –  This blog is a free, simple and quick platform to work with, but Google Blogger does not give much control, so serious Google Bloggers cannot have all of their needs met with this type of blogging platform. Also, because Google has control of your blog, it can be shut down or taken from you for pretty much any reason at all, meaning that you are leaving your work in someone else’s hands, and that’s not really the best option for anyone that is serious about their content.


WordPress –  This blogger is ideal if you are looking for a situation that is more permanent in terms of blogging. WordPress does have a free service, but if you want a permanent or long term blog, you should host your WordPress blog on your very own server – This is something that Google Blogger has not made possible! Hosting for your own site can be found for $10 or less on many websites, and with some simple installation, you can have your own WordPress blog, completely under your own control without anyone being able to tell you what you can or cannot say online.

2. RSS : Really Simple Syndication



RSS is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites. In the old days of the web to keep track of updates on a website you had to ‘bookmark’ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added.

RSS changes everything. It flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it was published.

Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication.

A very popular social networking service worldwide is Facebook. This service was originally created with the only purpose of helping students of Harvard University get to know each other better.

Facebook as social networking service owes its popularity to the fact that it is a very friendly and easy to use platform, which means any user does not need to be an expert in software or technology to use it. This platform provides users with a wide range of possibilities to interact and socialize. Facebook users can create their personal profiles with pictures, create lists of personal interests, communicate with friends, relatives, and other users, create and join interest groups, among other services.

The first time I signed in and tried with Facebook, I was really excited thinking of the lot of possibilities this platform was offering me to meet new people and socialize. I could not believe about its popularity. I realised how popular Facebook was when I started to contact many of my childhood friends, high school and college classmates, who I had lost track of due to many reasons. It was an amazing experience.

Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, informally known as “tweets.” (“”)

5. Tagging


A tag is a non-hierarchical keyword or term assigned to a piece of information such as an Internet bookmark, digital image, or computer file. This is a kind of metadata helps describe an item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags are generally chosen informally and personally by the item’s creator or by its viewer, depending on the system. (

There were special types of tags.

* Hash tags –  Words or phrases prefixed with a hash symbol “#”, with multiple words concatenated.

Eg.  #Vodka is my favourite #sprite

* Triple tags –  This is called as machine tag as well. It’s used a special syntax to define extra semantic information about the tag, making it easier or more meaningful for interpretation by a computer program. Also this have three parts such as namespace, a predicate and a value.

How to create an Successful blog?

I found amazing tips that you can add to your blog.

       1 .  Provide Value

This is the most important factor in creating a successful blog. You have to provide some value to your readers for them to want to read your blog and come back for more.  What is providing value? It’s the content that you create or a service that you provide. You create something that has value to your reader  and the more value you create the more people will notice your site, recommend it to friends and link to it. So you will get more and more new and regular readers.

How do you know what has value? Well, put yourself in the shoes of your reader. What do you think he or she would really like to read about? What could help him or her in some way in life? The more value a post can give to your reader, the more popular it is likely to be.

       2. Market your blog

When you first start out blogging no-one except your family and friends may know about your blog. How do you get attention and those first visitors? I found that, just email other bigger bloggers in your niche and tell them about your blog and your best articles or to submit – or let a friend submit your best material to a social bookmarking site.

You can’t sit around just hoping people will find your blog. You have to create good content and then you have to tell people about that content. However, if you have a new blog you may want to create some content like 5 to 10 good, valuable posts before you really start promoting it. An almost empty blog may leave a leaving visitor with a bad first impression.

     3. Learn from more experienced people

This is the key in any area of life and can really help you to improve quickly and avoid wasting time. Spend two or three weeks reading lots and lots from the massive archives of Problogger. Then you will learn a lot about blogging, marketing, monetization and what you should and should not to do.

     4. Optimize

Like with any other area in life it’s important that you learn from your own past and mistakes and from others. Then you improve and optimize your blog, business or diet. Don’t forget about this part, think about what worked well the last few months and what did not. Think about what you learned about headlines, social bookmarking and color-schemes. Then experiment and try to optimize the different parts of your blog.

     5. Be patient

We often tend to miscalculate how much time is required to reach the desired result. Don’t buy into myths about quick success. Don’t buy into your own calculations or fears too much either. Study other bloggers and learn how their audience have grown. Create reasonable expectations. Be patient and keep on creating, marketing and optimising your blog.

    6. Formatting is pretty and important.

Instead of just dumping your text as one big blob into a post use such things as subheadings, lists and white space. It makes your content so much more attractive and increases readability.

    7. Don’t think about what everyone else may think.

After your first big wave of new regulars has arrived you may start to experience a sort of stage fright. You may think “Oh, now I have a hundred regular readers, a hundred Jon’s and Marry’s waiting for some new content”. Then you start second-guessing yourself and worry that someone will be upset, mock you or that you will somehow screw up big time.

I just focus on the fun and excitement of the article I am writing and nothing more. Feeding your own fears will not help anyone.

     8. Future posting is your friend

In WordPress you can set the date and time for a post to appear on your blog. So if you are going on a vacation for a week you can write a few posts and then spread the posts out over the week. WordPress will take care of the posting while you are skiing in the alps or floating on in the Mediterranean.
